Home Energy Audits

In my last post, I mentioned the value added when you make choices that enhance the health, comfort, energy efficiency and sustainability of your home. Where to start?

Have a home energy audit done. A home energy audit wil help you determine how to reduce your home's impact on the environment, save money and add value to your property. For the low cost of $150 -  home energy auditors will evaluate your energy consumption, provide a detailed report of their findings and make recommendations that will help you save energy.

Buildings have to breathe to avoid problems with dampness [think leaky condos], but it there's more than a third of the air recycling every hour, you're wasting valuable energy. Simple solutions like plugging air leaks, installing programmable thermostats, tuning up your heating and cooling systems and switching to compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs will make a significant difference and save you money.

If you're sprucing up your home to sell it, or you've just bought a home with older, inefficient appliances, now's the time to switch to more energy efficient appliances. ENERGY STAR® appliances can reduce your energy bill by $50 a year for each appliance. And if it's time to replace your windows or heating system, choose high-efficiency products that have the ENERGY STAR® label. Check out the links on our 'Being Green'  page for grants, rebates and incentives to offset the cost of improving your energy efficiency.
